Don’t be scared! It’s good luck that Tammy Adams of Paisley Lizard has hosted this blog hop. Her superstition theme is great, as is having the reveal on Friday the 13th.
I wanted to make something based on a positive superstition. Although the evil eye is something negative, the eye motif is also used as a positive to ward off the evil eye, such as with this protective eye connector by Green Girl Studios. My piece started out as a necklace, but it wanted to be a wrap bracelet, so I complied.
I read about different gemstones and their protective properties, but in the end I just went with what I thought would be pretty. I used dark purple metallic beads with milky white and matte pink Czech glass. I added in some gold baroque seed beads, stamped sterling spacers and rhinestone rondelles. I added a hamsa charm by Nina Designs. The hamsa is also said to be protection against the evil eye.
As a fun little gesture for myself, I also included a Pennsylvania Dutch hex sign charm. When I was in grade school, I remember drawing one in art class. We were told they were good luck symbols. Although reading about them now, they are mainly for decoration. However, I had not thought of hex signs for many years and suddenly saw a group of charms and was able to obtain them. So they are my good luck charms!
I had a lot of fun making my evil eye bracelet and look forward to seeing what other participants made. A big thank you to Tammy Adams! Please click on the links below to see what superstitions inspired other people.
